アルファベット順も手がかりになります。Affect が Effect より先に来るように、action(行動、動詞)が先に起こり、その end result(最終的な結果、名詞)があとに続きます。何かをすると、その行動が物事に affect し、その先に出てくるのが effect です。

置き換えテストは二つ目の安全網です。次の語に置き換えて、どちらが成り立つか確かめましょう。

• 動詞の "influence" が当てはまるなら affect を書く。

Effect と impact と result

Effect、impact、result は意味が重なることがよくあります。Result が最も中立的で、effect は何かが引き起こした変化を強調し、impact はたいていより強い、あるいは大きな影響を示唆します。テストで迷ったら、名詞としては「effect」が無難です。

多くの解説が触れない例外

簡単なルール(affect = 動詞、effect = 名詞)は約95%のケースで正しいです。残りの5%が以下で、これを知ると「effect は名詞にしかならない」が完全には正しくない理由がわかります。

動詞の effect:実現させる
