What the CEFR Levels Mean
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is the international standard used by IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL iBT, and every major English qualification. Here is what each level means in practice.
A1 — Beginner
You understand and use very basic phrases and can introduce yourself and ask simple questions. Everyday interactions are manageable when the other person speaks slowly and clearly.
A2 — Elementary
You can communicate in simple, routine tasks and describe your background, immediate environment, and things you need. You understand frequently used expressions related to daily life.
B1 — Intermediate
You can handle most travel situations, write straightforward texts on familiar topics, and describe experiences, events, and plans. You follow the main points of standard speech on familiar subjects.
